What is Chronic Bad Breath?

More importantly, how do you deal with it once you have realized that you suffer from chronic bad breath?

Chronic Bad Breath Defined

When you have halitosis (another word for bad breath) which does not go away despite trying every remedy you have ever heard of, you have chronic bad breath.  It is simply bad breath which lasts for a very long term, as opposed to “morning breath” and the like.

Causes

There is a great variety of diseases which instigate chronic bad breath. These include but are not limited to diabetes, cancer and kidney failure. Dental issues can also cause halitosis, but you should approach a medical professional if you feel you have chronic bad breath which may be related to a serious disease.

Dealing With It

Regular brushing and flossing is good for oral hygiene, although sufferers of chronic bad breath may find that this does not eliminate the problem. This is because oral hygiene can only deal with most of the bacteria in your mouth, but cannot eliminate the trouble-makers completely. Tongue scraping with a silver or copper scraper is good for getting rid of foul food particles which cause bad breath. Mints and other “breath-freshening” products tend to merely cover the odor instead of removing it, so they should be avoided so that you can make use of other alternatives.

Alternative Remedies

Salt is a natural cleanser, and gargling with a salt water solution helps to get rid of many bacteria and other things which lead to chronic bad breath. There are many herbs, such as fennel, which can help to extract the smell from your mouth, although they may not necessarily cure your chronic halitosis. You can rinse your mouth with a solution of hydrogen peroxide, but you should be careful not to swallow it as it can cause stomach problems. Do not do this too often, however, and not more than two days in a row to be safe. Instead, make a habit of regularly rinsing your mouth with water after every meal to get rid of most of the stray food particles which stay on your tongue and cause foul odors.
